Awesome, sustainable experience on the Mekong delta river
We took a 3-hour tour focused mainly on the famous (though not so touristy) floating market on the Can Tho’s Mekong delta. Our guide was Jackie who’s a lovely, fun and enthusiastic young local who speaks great English (thus, you can learn a great deal from him not only about the tour’s content but Vietnam at large). Everything went smooth and as according to the schedule.
The tour was full of experiences (the floating market, a lovely boat ride through picturesque canal on the river, fresh carved fruit snacks or breakfast), but not too exhausting. The company works with a range of local producers and people, so you actually feel like your visit makes a positive impact to this intangible heritage gem. If we’d have a chance, we’d definitely take other, longer tours with Jackie. Thanks for this great experience!

Have just completed a fabulous tour with Sunday Go along the Mekong River to Can Rang Floating Market. Our tour guide Jackie is an absolute gem! He collected us at our hotel with a big smile and wisked us off to a waiting car for the short drive through the city centre to the river front. The boat trip along the Mekong River was superb! Jackie speaks perfect english and is a walking encyclopedia of information which he shares with great enthusiasm. His passion for his city, culture and history is intoxicating! We boated up and down the Mekong River and explored Can Rang Floating Market for a good hour, which was just the right amount of time to get a good feel for market life. Being on a small boat means we could be at the center of
all the action. Our boat took us side-by-side other boats laden with fresh from the field vegetables and orchard fruits as well as a variety of grains and seeds. The market is active from 4AM so by 7AM the floating restaurants and food vendors are busy serving fresh pineapple stalks, hot hi tieu (pork noodle soup) and banh my (fresh pork filled rolls) and the best ever Vietnamese coffee (from Da Lat).
Taking breakfast side-by-side vendors’ boats gave us some up close and personal time with locals, retailers and wholesalers. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming and happy to show off their boats and house boats and the produce they’ve brought to market. Despite the massive hard work that goes into bringing Vietnam’s produce to market, there is a festive vibe brought about in the happy greetings and chatting from boat to boat. We were greeted warmly by most and invited to take photos of everything — the sunrise, the river, the houses skiing the river, the boats, the produce on the boats, the people on the boats, their kitchens, their families, dogs and roosters!
We were boated from the market along the narrow canals twisting through the mangroves where there lively market gives way to a sudden stillness broken only by the sounds of nature and bird song, humming insects and jumping mudskippers. We stopped along the canal to walk through the bike-width only narrow streets to Can Tho’s main noodle making factory. This generations-old family operation produces 5000 Kg of noodles every day — with just 5 people working from 4AM to 2PM every day (except during TRT)! Jackie explained the start to finish process and introduced us to the family owner/operators who invited us to have a go rolling out the large noodle rounds onto bamboo trays ready for drying under the sun. This part of the tour is fascinating on its own and definitely is not a tag-on activity, it is a very interesting and enjoyable part of the tour and surprisingly different to the large scale factory-plant we expected.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 3.5 hour tour— shorter duration to many other tours but running an identical itinerary. 3.5 hours is perfect for this tour type. The early morning start maximized the do-able tine on the water under the hot sun — any longer would have crossed the line from hot to sweltering — yet it was not at all rushed. Cam Rang Floating Market is a must-do for anyone visiting the Mekong Delta — and I recommend Sunday Go for a fabulous tour. Ask for Jackie— he is a super-hero your guide and provides a gold star service.

This trip was really interesting and memorable in my travel journey. Honestly, the tour guides were very enthusiastic when promoting the stories and origins of baking. Fortunately, I got to experience baking in a beloved hometown. If I have a chance, I will come here with my family to enjoy the places, and have a wonderful atmosphere like here.
